    I love watching these ultralight videos and appreciate the interesting, instructional explanations. It's a shame that I've watched small airports disappear, one-after-another, as soaring land values have developers offering deals small airport owners can't refuse. The nearest uncontrolled airport is now 70 miles away from me.

    First plane i ever flew was a single surface rudder only quiksilver. I was in the USAF at the time. I sold it after 120 hours of rebuilding it to perfection including sails and engine. The first flight i hit a pocket of air and lost complete control. I remember watching the brace wires and wing tips flex in the turbulence which on this day was so calm the balloons were flying. (If hot air guys were out i usually was too). I got the plane down and another puff of wind pushed me off runway. As to not sideload the plane I just kinda went with it as the side was grass. I came to rest in a large fire ant pile and they climbed up the tire and destroyed my legs and thigh. I healed up fine, plane had no damage, so i parked it. 2 weeks later the FAA called me and notified me in was under investigation for leaving the runway at this small airport on my rollout. I explained what happened and at the time i was a student so i wasnt quite solo legal to fly and my thirst for flight was immense so i flew ultralight between training. Theybdid their best to try and revoke my student pilot license but it took a lot of convincing ultralights dont count. Turned out the airport Karen had reported me, and said i hit a runway sign. This particular sign was always bent from time ive been there and still to this day its bent. They fined me a couple thousand for the sign and inwasnt allowed to fly again till i finished my pilots license. After that things just weren't fun anymore and lost its magic. I still fly alot and enjoy it but im very anxious when flying now and hate being recorded which happens alot.

    I also had such an experience, for me not long after solo. Flying a Blanik L13 glider my shins hit the bottom of the instrument panel just after lift off behind my clubs 180 Super Cub. After fighting for control the entire ~15 minute flight I opted for 80mph rather than 55-60 in the pattern. I’m not sure if that was really smart, but it worked. Our field was enclosed by trees so there was almost no wind on the ground. Landed long of coarse. Spoilers really help get rid of speed. During the flight my ASI was swinging up and down even though I maintained good attitude wrt the horizon. It must have stabilised enough to set the speed. Like you there were hills around us. Thanks for sharing.

    The forward slips I've done (all J3 Cub) involve stick into the wind (windward wing down), adjusting for direction, and almost full opposite rudder. I've only ever done these (aside from practice at altitude) on final to landing. Contrast this with a side slip that has stick into wind, but opposite rudder only enough to get nose aligned with runway centerline. I'm a relatively novice pilot, so this question may reflect that: is your forward slip taking place initially doing a 360° turn?

    • @CourtneyTakesFlight
      @CourtneyTakesFlight 13 дней назад

      I only did the 360 because I was pretty close to the airport. Otherwise I would have had to do some fairly sharp "S" turns to arrive there at the right altitude.

    I definitely lack the gonads to do ultralight. Are they 'experimental' aircraft? Is every bolt and cable and screw and system FAA tested and approved? ( I just Googled it, and see that the craft are not certified by FAA. Which makes you not only brave, but potential insane too lol )

    • @CourtneyTakesFlight

      Like all types of aircraft, the majority of crashes are due to pilot error. The hardware used for experimental aircraft are aviation grade.

    as someone before me told: it is nkt rocket science and all about stall speed... i.m quite convinced that all those crashes happen bcs people don,t even read a single page of any flight insteuction manual at all. i read "stick and rudder" last winter...it is basically horrible ro read as ghe author always tells what people "think and say"...so hebp,ants a lot of misconcemptions into every chapter which he then corrects...a very idiotic and tiresome experience ro read...but surely came feom his experience with student pilots... people shoukd get the basics: min. speed= stall speed for every maneuvre and flight condition...and never go too close to that, for that one needs ro know the basic rules for higher stall speed multiplied by factor due ro higher weights and G loads, ...as high desity altitude gives already "corrected " speed on pitot fed wind speed meters.... ok, so why do they crash: maybe bcs they just don,t use any avionics at all! or when they use a GOS these give "over the ground soeed" not relative wind speed! only the latter is relevant...lack of education and knowledge about physics...most people don,t even jnderstand any FAA literature! many instructirs don,t do either, they just repeat over and over again empty phrases...but knkwing a phrase does not mean understanding the content... sorry for typies...and i suggest ro read at least stick and eudder before trying to fly anything...then fo for at least one flight and try it out with some rented airplane and it,s pilot... it is not difficult, but you need to get the basics like on a bicicle or when you learn walking! contacting a Slovakian club for UL lessons they told me : 4 hours, the rest is just for patternwork or for the law...crazy! or real? and for those who learn with crow hops: don,t leave ground effect, get a working wind speed metering device, no matter if you built it yourself or hwatever, stick a tabella onto your panel with basic G loads and minimal speeds for your design( if you don,t know those don,t fly anyways! learn the basics...took me 2,5 years to learn all the details in aerodynamics...) ...and when you play stupid and force something you will die! 30% of all private pilots died not long ago on their "hobby"... oh yes: get an idea about wingloading and drafts, many ULs simply get blown away on landing by a draft or upwind, turned all over and so on...second a sidewind kills your lift! similar ( or basically exactly as ) in a crab or sideslip floght condition....the margine fro ULs is very barrow, as ghe wing loading is so low! the lower the lading the lower the speed...the smaller the margine! fighters take off in storms...yes, but any bird would never do so... try to find those speed values for your bird and kind of flying, i t sadly is burried somewhere in hundreds of pages of FAA material or in marginal instruction...all you need is 3 tabellas...turns, altitude/ high desity altitude, sidewinds( good luck finding anything for the last one) , then you get an idea about flight conditions and stall speeds , which change deliberately in diff. conditions....at least, no matter if anyone will give me instruction for my money or not, those are the numbers i write on my panel all around the speed scale! this is what i was taught by a military pilot on a Sxottish channel, he flies like that! and it works on a DS-1 ! good luck, clear skies...and i wonder if i get an invitation for training.. for my gard cash off course...or i learn it alone...

  • @SR-gs8zo
    @SR-gs8zo 17 дней назад

    the list shows that people act like idiots knowing nothing! the FAA gives you free learning material online! read it! read it all and make a lisz what is really esssential for flight: stall speed, turning speed, maneuvre speed, basic weather and high desity altitude knowledge, properly working equipment! 90% of UL videos online teel about crappy rusty half worn out falling apart engines and rusty nolts frames and baby trolley wheels on ULs! it,s ridiculous! but look up wheels for ULs on Aircraft speuce, many don.t even fulfill FAA requirements for airplanes=3 times weight as min static load! when i mailed to them they just made excuses that they have to ask the supplier..but basically 3 times the weight is not really didficult to dond out, there is max limit for ULs and everyone stresses that out!

    he died in a crow hop? that is almost impossible unless people don,t know what a ceow hop actually is! the method was told before ww2 in all contruction books regarding airplanes ( yes, i read about all the 5 online available in online lobraries, and half of the technical design calculations are basically idiocies...). .but the crow hop method uses ground effect to get a feeling for the airplane in very slow floght just above ground! so how did he die? and the UL was homebuilt, hmmm? and now it,s the training that killed him while nobody actually knows if the bird was built correctly!

      He died in a second crash following that first crash which was a crow hop. He apparently stalled at 300 feet and spun in

    Thank you for your awesome videos! You've opened my eyes to the discovery flight thing. Luckily I have a flight school nearby. Going to book a flight on a cesna 172. 😁
